Volleyball Wins Their Final Home Game

In their final home game of the season, the Lady Dons swept San Jose State three sets to zero.  This was the last home game for the seniors: middle blocker Carly Babin, setter Darcy Carroll, middle blocker Alix Gombos, outside hitter Zuzana Bednarova, and outside hitter Addie Webster.
The first set was relatively short since the Lady Dons dominated San Jose State throughuot the set.  After losing the first point, USF gained the lead after three straight points were made.  The Lady Dons continued to open up their lead throughout the set and won the set 25 to 14.
San Jose State looked as though they were going to avoid a sweep by opening up the second set by winning four straight points.  The Lady Dons were slowly gaining on San Jose State until they tied at 9 apiece.  For the next few points, there were many lead changes and ties.
The momentum changed when it was tied at 12 and the Lady Dons won four straight points to go up 16-12.  The team continued to build on this lead.  San Jose State managed to tie the set at 22, in which the Dons reponded by winning the next point.  However, San Jose State tied the game at 23.  The Lady Dons won the set 25-23.
USF opened up the third set by winning two straight points.  San Jose State managed to pull ahead of the Dons by going up 4-3.  For the next few points, there were many lead changes and ties.  The Lady Dons gained a manageable lead when they went up 10-8.  They held onto the lead, although most of the lead was only by a point.
When the score was 17-15, San Jose State managed to gain the lead when they won three straight points to go up 18-17.  The Lady Dons regained the lead by going up 19-18; San Jose State tied the game at 19.  The Lady Dons won four straight points to up 23-19.  The Lady Dons held onto the lead to win the third set 25-23.
Sophomore Sarah Mandala had 14 digs, four digs and three blocks.  Carly Babin had 11 kills, two digs and three blocks (including one solo).  Alix Gombos added 12 kills, a dig and two blocks.  Junior libero Haley Carroll added 19 digs while Darcy Carroll added 12 digs.
The Lady Dons finish the season at 22-7 as well as earning second place in the West Coast Conference. Seniors Carly Babin and Alix Gombos as well as sophomore Sarah Mandala were named to the All-WCC First Team along with honorable mentions for senior Darcy Carroll and junior Haley Carroll.
This is the first time any USF women’s volleyball team member has been selected to the WCC First Team.
